Formal Introductions

Hello World!

Welcome to Alternatives to Ten, an experimental play area on the web. Like it says on the front page, I’m Andrew. I’m a free software advocate, web developer/designer, and table-top gamer.

I’m going to use this space to talk about what’s on my mind. At least, that’s the plan. I have a day job and I do client work on the side so my free time tends to be lacking. But, my writing skills could use some improvement and the only way to get better is to keep writing so that is what I am going to do.

Topics of Discussion

GNU/Linux

I am a Debian user and frequent planner of becoming a maintainer when I can find the time. I prefer Debian to other distros (I’ve tried a lot of them) and I’ll probably let you know why in a post here.

Table Top Role-Playing Games

I have been a table top gamer for most of my life, like a lot of people my age I started with red box D&D and moved on from there. I tend to prefer narrativist games, to the point I usually convert simulationist mechanics to narrativist mechanics when I’m running a game. One of the pieces you will for sure find here is my ongoing work developing an Eclipse Phase port to the Apocalypse Engine.

Teaching/Training

I work as a technical trainer by day. While I’m not going to discuss my employer on this forum I may have some general thoughts on both education and training.

Some Things You Will Not Find

No Social Networks

I have a few social network accounts, but they are for close friends and family. I like to keep my personal and professional lives separate. If you are really super impressed with me and just dying to give me a job I’m sure you can find me on Linkdin.

No Advertisements

And no Google Analytics on top of that. This is a personal site for my writing. If you want to subscribe to me that’s great, really. I won’t track you, sell your personal information for profit, or anything like that.

I’ve been working online since the late nineties. In all of that time I have rarely encountered a posting online that was improved by having comments. If you really want to discuss something I wrote that badly you can use my contact page to send me an email.

So hello world. Welcome.
